66′ to 68′ Sanford Central Championship Teams to Reunite This Friday
Many will remember the 1966-68 Yellow Jacket football teams that won 3 straight Eastern titles and featured some of the best talent in the state. The 1968 team finished a championship season at 13-0-0 and beat Roxboro in the finals 33-0. It is remembered not only as one of the best 3A teams in history but also one of the most dominant.
All-American Steve Jones was the leader of the group with his toughness on offense and defense, later starring at Duke University before playing 6 years in the NFL. Many of the players to include quarterback Tom Haislip and Linebacker Dennis Wicker still reside in the Sanford area.
While many remember this team, this Friday night will be an opportunity for these former players to remember the games and the times they had together. They will also remember their Head Coach and friend Paul Gay, who will be on hand this Friday at Paul B. Gay stadium. The Lee County Yellow Jackets (5-0) will host Anson County (3-2) this Friday night. The game will air locally on WFJA Sports 105.5 FM and stream online at: www.wfjawwgpradio.com.
